day 94: EIAJ
Sorry blog ladies but there is something that I just don’t get the appeal of: Oats in a Jar. I don’t know who started this phenomenon but it can be seen here, here, here, here, here, and probably a lot of other blog posts. The idea is that when you’ve finished off a jar of nut butter, you put your cooked oats into the empty jar and eat them from it, adding any toppings you like. Maybe someone can explain what’s so great about it? The jar is sticky and you can’t get your hand in it to scrape the jar bottom. Given the choice I’d much prefer to eat my oats in a cute ceramic bowl. There’s no luxury in a plastic jar. I leave it to Bagigis.
Let’s try something else in a jar: Poached Eggs in a Jar. I heart eggs.
I got this idea from my Cooked in Africa cookbook which has a recipe for poached eggs in a tin cup. But unfortunately I don’t have a tin cup so I used a mason jar instead.
This takes quite a bit longer than just dropping the eggs in boiling water, but it makes for a really cute presentation. And they’re portable (making them almost made me late for work this morning, so I just screwed on the lid and brought them with me!).
I topped mine with sea salt, black pepper, mustard seeds, thyme, and capers. Yummy!

I love your poached eggs idea, although I do also enjoy OIAJ. All the nut butter remnants stuck to the inside of the jar melt into the oats–but it is frustrating to scrape up the last bits from the bottom.
Hee, I understand the strangeness of oats in a jar. I’ve been scraping the ends of my PB jars for YEARS, so it’s just a natural progression to have oats in there. Poached eggs, I have not tried, but that’s a genius idea to prevent the mess I always make when I poach eggs the regular way. And capers – yes!
OK, I’m obviously out of the oat-y loop. I had never heard of OIAJ, so I checked there, there, there, there and there. For the most part they looked revolting, which is surprising, as I like oats! Your eggs, on the other hand, looked divine!
Egg idea seems much better than the oiaj. The only benefit of OIAJ I see is that you end up using every crumb of the PB in the jar.
I have never tried the oats in a jar thing, but I do see it absolutely everywhere! I also think I would prefer a bowl…I don’t like digging around the bottom of a jar with my spoon. I like bowls. Easier access. But to each their own.
So creative and pretty! This would be a really cute idea for entertaining breakfast guests!
i REALLY like this. it’s adorable and makes a simple breakfast look so decadent.
Love the eggs!!! ps. I’m not an oat person, so I really don’t get the oats in a jar-thing either
I love peanut butter and oats, but I’ve been hit or miss with the OIAJ. The first two times I tried it I really liked it. The third time was pretty yuck!
LOVE your poached eggs in a jar! I’ve never poached an egg because I wasn’t sure how..now I have no excuse not too!
Cool idea! Easy and totally not messy.
love this! i find poaching eggs is so hard this makes it easy! thanks for the bloggy shout out even though you do not like oats in a jar
THAT IS BRILLIANT! I like that it’s in GLASS, too. I’m sorry, something about putting HOT oatmeal in an unsafe plastic jar just seems silly to me. Most of those jars are not meant to have steamy hot substances in them. So, I agree…OIAJ = silly! I don’t get it!
I agree, some popular blog foods I just don’t get! My Mom used to always serve poached eggs in a glass, but I never thought of actually poaching them in the glass! Great idea
What a brillant idea! I love this presentation too, I think it would be very nice to serve at a breakfast. Rustic-y.
Oats in a glass jar…that’s the only way to go! I recommend Mara Natha
haha I love OIAJ but those EIAJ look amazing!!!!
Ooooh, awesome!!! Great idea..thanks for sharing!
