GameReviewWiki.com Review

If you need that nudge to buy this game, then go buy it. If you are looking for confirmation about this being the best game ever, it is not - but its not too far from being outstanding. If you are going to use this article to point out reasons not to buy it, then look elsewhere. Uncharted 2 is definitely one of the must have games of this Holiday Season. It's really hard to separate the gameplay from the story of this game - because the developers really merge the two together really well. Rather than the feel of playing an normal video game, it feels more like you are playing out a whole movie. Everything from the suggestive camera angles to the excellent dialogue immerses you into the whole experience... and diverges away from a typical game. In fact, the dialogue was so good someone passing by my desk asked if I was watching a movie!

What about the gameplay? Well, it is pretty typical of any first person action game. You follow the main character Drake around in a third person view, and switch to first person view when you want to aim your weapon. You can hide behind cover which is pretty much everything and pop out using the aim button to fire off a few rounds. If you get up and personal with your opponent you enter a fight sequence where you mash the attack and dodge using triangle at the appropriate frame - very much gears of war style but without the chainsaw. And if you sneak up on your opponent you can instant kill them. As far as you can tell, it is the same old 3rd to 1st person shooter. Is this a bad thing? Not at all. Mainly because they throw in action sequences - instead of run&gun you will have to use the action button to work your way around the environment. And the game is constantly moving from one to another so you are never bored.

The replay value on Uncharted 2 is really standard. You will have your typical multiplayer modes, multiple difficulties, 100 collectibles, lots of unlockables (weapons, cinematics, costumes, etc.) and about 10 to 15 hours of standard story gameplay. There is a lot in this package, but the bulk of your replay will be with the multiplayer... and if that isn't your cup of tea then you will probably trade this game after the single player.

Why the not perfect score? Well, a game like this has been done and its called Metal Gear Solid 4 (which I enjoyed 5 times as much as this game - and it has a way longer story). However and please quote me on this, everyone who can breathe air should still buy this game - and probably buy MGS4 afterward. Everyone else is probably not able to breathe.

    Gameplay

3rd person view except when using your weapon (you can run and gun blindly too). You have an action button, a melee button, a hide behind cover button, and of course aim and fire. When hiding behind cover, you can tap the aim button to peer out and fire or you can blindly (you can actually see, but your accuracy is very low) fire around corners. Another neat feature is sneaking... technically you are always sneaking and once spotted you cannot sneak up on an enemy. Anyways, while sneaking you can take out foes in one blow with the tap of the melee button. If you engage in melee outside of sneaking, you will enter an action sequence where you mash the melee button and hit the dodge button on the right (slowed down) frame.
